You’re most at risk for gum disease if you don’t see your dentist regularly and ignore your oral hygiene. Of course, there are other risk factors, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Immune Health Issues
  • Dry Mouth
  • Smoking and Tobacco Use
  • Family History
  • Certain Medications

Gum Disease Risk Factors Explained

Diabetes, Hormonal Changes, and Immune Health

Diabetes, especially uncontrolled, puts you at risk for many oral and physical health issues. When diabetes isn’t well controlled, it makes healing difficult, which then puts you at risk for gum disease.

Hormonal changes, as seen during pregnancy, and an inability to fight infections or ward off bacteria are also risk factors.

Dry Mouth and Smoking

Smoking is inflammatory, as is gum disease. Dry mouth and smoking, especially if you have both issues, are significant risk factors for gum disease.

Medications

Some medications, such as chemotherapy, can put you at risk for gum disease because they compromise your immune system. Always share a current list of medications with your dentist.

Genetics: Is Gum Disease in Your Family?

Even if you have a family history of gum disease, regular dental care and excellent oral hygiene can mitigate your risks. Therefore, be sure to visit your Appleton dentist every six months and brush and floss at least twice a day.

Periodontal Treatment in Appleton

Of course, prevention is always the best course, but if you are diagnosed with gum disease, we can help. Treatments may include planing and scaling (deep teeth cleanings), specific at-home oral care routines, topical antibiotics, or surgery.

In the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, we can often cure the issue, rather than just treating it.
