Back to school can be a welcome return to routine and a major source of parental anxiety! Do you wonder if they're indulging in sweet snacks with their friends or whether they are making the best food choices when left to their own devices?
The school year has likely started for your child, but it’s not too late to instill healthy habits by following a few simple tips to promote improved oral health this year.
Oral Health Tips for Your School-Aged Child
As an Appleton dentist, I see my share of pediatric cavities, but there are ways to mitigate the risk.
Tips for a healthier smile:
Consider Tooth-Healthy Snacks
I recommend packing crunchy veggies or low-fat yogurt in your child’s lunch or backpack. Whether part of their midday meal or as a post-lunch snack, it’s always best to have healthy choices throughout the day. Also, bottled water is far better for teeth than sodas or fruit juice. Be sure after-school snacks are equally nutritious.
Send a Travel-Sized Toothbrush
Packing a travel-sized toothbrush and floss can help keep your child’s oral health on track. Typically, there are short free periods after lunch or between classes, allowing your child to have a quick oral hygiene session in the middle of the day.
Be Diligent at Home
Your child should brush at least twice daily and floss no less than once (when age-appropriate). Be sure they spend time on their teeth and do not race through the task to move on to other things.
Visit My Dental Office
Your child should see me at least twice yearly for dental exams and teeth cleanings in Appleton. It’s always a good idea to schedule these appointments before school starts or shortly after. This allows me to address any cavities or oral health issues before they cause pain and distract your child from learning.
